In 2011, you get three extra days to file your taxes. The due date is Monday, April 18. It’s not because of the processing delay that prevented people who itemize their taxes from filing before mid- to late February. Instead, the mini-extension come thanks to Emancipation Day, a Washington, DC holiday that celebrates the freeing of slaves in the district.
If you still can not make the April 18th deadline, you may file for an automatic 6 month extension. This extends your filing date only it does not give you an extension of time to pay… if you think you are going to owe taxes, your extension should include an estimate of the amount you will owe once your return is filed.
As of this posting, there are only 13 days left to file your return on time with no extension.
